A reminder about our "Last Call for UNCW Track" event this Wednesday at Bombers in downtown Wilmington. Many raffles up for grabs including a week stay at a villa in Belize, 2 club level tickets to the Panthers vs Eagles game this October in Charlotte, a Carnival Cruise out of Charleston, SC, a Chipotle Catering voucher for 25 people, running shoes from Fleet Feet, as well as gift certificates for running shoes from Brooks. We fully expect to hit our goal this week but we could use one last push over the finish line. So if you are in Wilmington, please plan to be at Bombers Bev Co. on Wednesday night!

Hello fellow runners. On this day three hears ago, I lost a very good friend of mine. Together we logged hundreds, probably thousands of miles running together throughout my college years. Heather was the first person this little, small town Wilmington girl met, when I went to college in Miami. She had a huge heart for people and loved to run. She was a little thing, short, but man could she fly! Heather was one of my favorite people to run with because she could really push me with her very quick cadence and she never seemed to tire. Three years ago, I got the news that she was hit by a truck while running and killed instantly. If you go for a Memorial Monday run today, please think of my friend Heather. Please be safe running. Rest easy Heather.

I had an interesting and satisfying long run yesterday. Saturday is my long run day and I had 12 miles on the schedule. Garmin Connect shows I pressed the start button at 5:23 am at the intersection of Carlton and College Acres Drive. I ran up to Oriole, over to Cardinal, and took Eastwood toward the beach. I left Eastwood before the bridge to take the Summer Rest trail before heading back to the Rogersville / Rill trail and circle the UNCW campus. Just before leaving Summer Rest and right below the Port City Chop House, with the light still low, I rounded a slight bend and came to a dead stop 12 to 15 feet in front of a buck deer, spike antlers covered in velvet and maybe 8 to 10 inches long. We stared at one another for what seemed like minutes but was actually probably no more than 30 to 45 seconds. I wondered if he was going to try to gore me with us being so close, he may have been wondering if I was going to try to hurt him. Finally he just slowly strolled across the trail, not jumped, bounded, or ran, and entered the wooded area on the other side. What makes me feel satisfied today is that I realize I surprised him just as much as he surprised me. That means I must have been running almost silently, feet touching the ground lightly instead of beating myself half to death with a sloppy foot strike. Y'all have fun out there!
