Brenda Estlack continues her 50-54 Grand Prix age group domination - looking for her 3rd Championship in as many years.  Since 2010 she has overtaken our areas masters womens' running ranks.  This photo taken as she finished 2nd female and 5th overall (21:20) out of more than 400 at the innaugural 'Blue Ribbon Run 5k'.

Average joes become mud flinging trail monsters in the annual 3, 9 and 18 Mile Race.  If you win a limited edition Powell Peralta R4R skate board, you earned it.  If not, we will see you on the starting line on Feburary 22, 2014 for the 6th Anual Run for Ray.  "On your left' -no matter the weather.

Rookie runner question for you guys.... On Sunday I want to do my long run ( hoping for 10 miles ) but it's also my day to lift. Do I lift then run or run then lift? Gym hours are 11-1. Early morning run then gym? Or gym then evening run? Thank you!! (Lifting plan: squats, deadlift, press, rows, pull ups, push ups, ab work )

I would not do squats on long run day. Otherwise, I'd lift then run. Less risk of injury.

Carrie, I do my heavier gym time on my short, easy run days (Monday and Wednesday or Thursday) and a core/shoulders/stretching gym day on a running rest day. It's been a good pattern for me and keeps everything from getting overworked.

I agree, Dan. I do resistance 2-3 times per week on non-run days. Then one flexibility day. If I'm in serious mode, I'll do more flexibility on short run days, but never resistance on run days.

Christina - That's perfect. Thank you. I used to do Crossfit but recently decided to focus on the lifts and not so much the WODs but I'm also trying to up my miles / speed with running (still fairly new to me). I'm training for the WB 1/2 in March.

I also balance Crossfit and running, too. Its tricky but in general, I go to crossfit M-F at 6am, doing my heaviest lifting on Tuesday, followed by a fairly easy 3 mile run in the afternoon. Generally I run Tues, Weds, Sat and Sun.

I know of quite a few NCAA Div 1 distance running programs (XC/Track) that prefer to get a strength training session after their Sunday long run. We prefer to keep hard days hard and easy days easy. Will you be tired for the lifting if done after the long run? Sure. But are you running to become a better lifter or lifting to become a better runner? I'm guessing the latter. Ideally, you would come back in the afternoon with at least 6 hours between them to maximize benefits from both. Also depends on what day you run your harder primary workouts during the week. If Monday-Wednesday, I'd wait to lift after those runs. If Tuesday-Thursday, I'd lift Sunday-Tuesday-Thursday. Many elite runners prefer to lift on their hard days and I know of many that lift on their easy days. We have done both ways at UNCW. I'd experiment both ways and see how it affects your running.
